Ben Shamburger, MSW
For over 35 years, Ben Shamburger has served his country and fellow Americans. He’s an active member of our community, volunteering with Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Delaware for more than 25 years and as a certified Delaware Hospice volunteer. He’s served as board member for the Delaware Homeless Planning Council, Delaware Parents Association and Big Brothers & Big Sisters of Delaware. His awards and citations include the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Governor’s Outstanding Volunteer Award, National and State Big Brother of the Year Award, Thomas Jefferson Award, Eagles Community Quarterback Award and the National Register’s “Who’s Who” in Executives and Professionals.
Professionally, following a 21-year military career with the United States Air Force, Ben began his “second career” as a federal civilian employee with the Office of Personnel Management. In 1998 he joined the Social Security Administration and was promoted throughout all levels of the organization until his retirement in 2011.
Ben began his teaching career in the U.S. Air Force and found it be a great passion and continued to do so in the public sector. He has taught numerous courses in the fields of Sociology and Social Work at several institutions such as Delaware Technical & Community College, Wilmington University, and Delaware State University. He joined the faculty of DSU, Sociology and Criminal Justice in 2015 as its first “Retention Specialist” working with incoming freshman to help them persist and succeed academically.
