Joseph J. Bangura, PhD

Joseph J. Bangura is Professor of History at Delaware State University and holds a PhD in Modern African History with research and teaching interests in African Diaspora Studies, African American and World History, Gender Studies, Islam, Environmental and Globalization and Global South Studies. Dr. Bangura is the author and co-editor of three books and has published several refereed book chapters in highly acclaimed works. He has also published scholarly articles in top-level academic journals on multiple topics: Gender Relations, Transcontinental and Intercontinental Migration, Islamization and Africanization of Islam, Peacebuilding, Governance and Security in Africa. His pathbreaking monograph, The Temne of Sierra Leone: African Agency in the Making of a British Colony is one of the leading scholarly works on ethnocentrism and identity formation in Sierra Leone. Dr. Bangura is currently working on two book projects for Cambridge University Press and Routledge (Taylor and Francis). He has served as external reviewer for highly ranked scholarly journals on topics related to the Global South. He is the founding editor of the book series, Anthem Advances in African Cultural Studies and serves as Associate Editor (Africa) for the Journal of Global South Studies (JGSS). Dr. Bangura has presented his research at conferences in North and South America, Europe, and Africa. He has also co-convened major academic conferences in North America and Europe, and chaired panels at various conferences such as the African Studies Association, West African Research Association and Association of Global South Studies conferences. From 2020-2022, he served as a member of the American Historical Association (AHA) Program Committee. Dr. Bangura has provided consultancy work for the United States Army Directed Studies Office on separate occasions. Outside his academic exertions, Dr. Bangura currently serves as a member of the Town of Townsend Council where he chairs and co-chairs the Finance and Public Safety Committees. Finance and Public Safety Committees.
